Wireless cameras are sold as “no cables”. The cable they still depend on is the air between the camera and your router. On a Berkshire house that air includes brick, foil-backed plasterboard, a conservatory roof, and 15 metres of wet garden. Video is a terrible passenger on that path.
If the camera is the product and the WiFi is an afterthought, you get the tickets we get: missed motion, a black app, a doorbell that works until it rains.
Why the camera fails where your phone looks fine
You test WiFi in the kitchen with a phone. The camera lives over the front door, in a plastic housing, looking at a cold wall. It uploads a stream, often 24 hours, often in the evening when every neighbour’s network is busy.
Typical killers:
- Exterior walls and thermal insulation
- Distance down a drive in Ascot or Virginia Water
- Metal soffits, garage doors, and cars as reflectors
- 2.4GHz congestion in terraced Slough and Maidenhead streets
- A mesh node in the wrong place, repeating an already weak signal
- Power-saving on battery cameras that look like a dropout
- Wet foliage in summer that was not there when you hung the camera in March
Poor WiFi upstairs is the indoor version of the same physics. Outdoor cameras are that problem with weather.
A phone holds a web page on a few kilobits and retries without you noticing. A camera trying to push a live stream does not get that luxury. The app shows 30 percent WiFi and a green icon. The uplink still collapses when a neighbour’s network fills the channel.
Foil-backed plasterboard in newer Bracknell and Maidenhead houses is a Faraday cage with furniture in it. Solid Victorian brick in Windsor does the same job the old-fashioned way. Neither cares that the listing called the camera “long range”.
Mesh, extenders and the false fix
An extender on the landing does not create a stable 4K uplink at the gate. It often makes a second weak network the camera latches onto.
Mesh can help when:
- You can put a node in a window that actually faces the camera
- That node has wired backhaul, not another wireless hop
- You accept that the camera is still a WiFi client with all the fragility that implies
Mesh cannot help when the honest path is 25 metres of garden and a brick gable. That is a Cat6 run, or it is a camera you should not buy.
Whole-home design for the house itself is whole home WiFi. Do not ask CCTV to paper over a hallway router.
We see “WiFi 7 mesh” kits bought to rescue a gate camera that never saw the new radios. The camera is on 2.4GHz, through brick, past a car. The mesh sat in the kitchen because that is where the socket was. Nothing about that is a camera fault.
A dedicated SSID for cameras is tidy. It does not add signal. If the RSSI at the housing is poor, renaming the network does not move the brick. Put an access point where the camera actually is, or stop using WiFi for that view.
The reliable fix: stop putting cameras on WiFi
PoE cameras do not join the SSID. They join a switch. The picture does not care that the microwave is on. The recorder still writes if the broadband drops, which is the moment you actually wanted CCTV.
That is why our default on CCTV installation is wired, with wireless only for the leftover position we cannot cable. Hybrid is fine. All-wireless on a large plot is how you buy the system twice.
If you already own wireless cameras and they almost work, we can:
- Move or add an access point that covers that wall
- Put the cameras on a less congested channel and a dedicated SSID
- Replace the worst offenders with PoE and keep one doorbell on WiFi
We will not promise a battery camera on a far gate.
The cable day is the same skill as access-point cabling. Loft, soffit, a labelled Cat6, PoE from the cupboard. On a Bracknell house with boards in the loft that is a short afternoon. On a long Virginia Water drive it may include a buried run. Either way, the picture stops depending on the weather and the street’s 2.4GHz.
Battery cameras have a second failure mode
They sleep. They wake on motion. They miss the start of the event. They die in January. They then look like a WiFi fault in the app.
If you need continuous evidence, battery is the wrong category, not the wrong brand. Categories are in the choosing CCTV guide. Storage behaviour is in recorder vs cloud.
Cold Berkshire mornings are hard on cells. A camera that “worked all summer” on a shed will drop overnight in January, then reconnect at noon, then look like an intermittent WiFi problem. Check the charge and the wake settings before you buy another mesh node.
Battery cameras also throttle upload to save power. A doorbell that sends a still, then a clip later, is not the same as a PoE camera writing to disk. If the event is a person at the side gate, you wanted the walk-up, not the moment they were already leaving.
When we still leave a camera on WiFi
Not every leftover view is a failure. A doorbell on a terrace where the hallway WiFi is already strong can stay wireless. A rental where we cannot drill the eaves can stay wireless. A temporary camera on a site hut can stay wireless.
The test is honest coverage at the housing, at dusk, with the rest of the household on the network. If a phone next to the camera cannot hold a stable uplink, the camera will not either. We measure there, not at the kettle. Rain on a Maidenhead conservatory roof and a wet Ascot hedge both change that number from the dry Saturday you hung the camera.
If that test fails, we do not “try a better wireless camera”. We change the position, add a wired access point that actually faces the wall, or we cable it. Three options. “It might be fine in summer” is not one of them. A camera that only works at noon is not a security system.
Hybrid remains the normal Berkshire design: wired on the approaches that matter, wireless on the one view that would need a trench you do not want. Write that into the quote so the shed camera is not treated as evidence.
What we do on a dropout call-out
We stand where the camera stands, not where the kettle is. We measure. We look at the switch, the mesh, and the cable cupboard. Then we recommend either a WiFi change or a cable. The second one is more popular after the third dropout.

If the rest of the house WiFi is also a mess, fix both on one visit. Cameras on a healthy LAN still look like magic compared with cameras on a screaming ISP router.
A typical call: doorbell fine, rear camera dead after 7pm, driveway camera “offline” after rain. The rear camera is through a conservatory roof. The drive camera is on a metal soffit 18 metres from a hallway router. Neither is a mystery. One may get an access point in a rear window with wired backhaul. The drive camera should have been PoE. We would rather tell you that on the first visit than sell another wireless kit.
A driveway example that keeps coming back
Camera on a brick gate pillar, router in a hallway, mesh node in a kitchen, 18 metres of wet air and a car. The app says 30 percent WiFi. Video looks fine at noon and dies at 8pm when the street’s 2.4GHz fills up. Someone buys a WiFi 7 mesh. Nothing changes, because the camera never saw 7.
The repair is a Cat6 in the gravel or along a fence, into the pillar, PoE from the cupboard. It is not romantic. It works. That is data cabling plus CCTV installation, which is how we prefer to sell the job rather than as a wireless miracle.
We have done this on Windsor and Ascot drives enough times that we now say it on the first survey. If you only need a doorbell and the WiFi at the door is already good, stay wireless. This article is for the cameras that were never in range.
