Cost is the CCTV question this site did not answer clearly enough. Search Console already shows people looking for surveillance camera installation cost in Berkshire. Here is the honest version, without a fake price list that ignores your driveway.

What a typical home system actually is
Most family homes want two to four outdoor cameras, an NVR in a dry cupboard, tidy cable and the app working on a phone before we leave.
That is not a “4K package” from a comparison site. It is a designed shell: front door, drive or approach, side path if you have one, and the rear that people actually use. Where to position cameras matters more than megapixels.
The cameras are not the expensive part. A decent PoE dome is a known cost. The quote moves with labour: getting to the mount, hiding the route, and commissioning something you can live with.
We default to wired PoE and local recording. Cloud-only kits look cheaper until the subscription and the dropouts show up. Recorder vs cloud explains why we keep footage on site.
What drives the labour, not the brochure
The quote moves with:
- Camera count and whether each view is actually useful
- Mounting height and safe access (ladder vs roof vs a simple soffit)
- Loft route versus outdoor conduit or a short trench
- Gate posts, long gravel drives and extra buildings
- Whether the indoor network can carry remote viewing
- Conservation or listed constraints on street elevations
- Whether we are already opening the loft for data cabling or access points
A short Peascod-side or estate-street job is a different day to a Sunningdale gate and garden building.
Night-capable cameras at a usable height need a safe working platform. That time sits in the quote. So does crawling a boarded loft versus a clean void we already know from the last house on the road.
We do not invent a per-camera menu and hope it matches your plot. We look at photos, then we give one number.
What a quote includes
A proper quote itemises:
- Cameras and mounts
- NVR or recorder, with storage sized for how long you want to keep footage
- Cat6 or outdoor-rated cable, including the external drops
- Weatherproof entry and tidy internal termination
- App setup and a walk-through of live view and playback
- Testing that each camera still records when the WiFi in the kitchen is busy
It does not silently include a whole-home WiFi redesign unless we agreed that. If the cupboard router cannot hold a remote session, we will say so up front. What to expect from a Berkshire CCTV install is the day-of version.

Wired versus a cheap wireless kit
A shelf kit looks cheaper. You then discover the rear camera freezes, the cloud plan is monthly, and the hallway WiFi cannot carry four streams.
Wired PoE keeps recording off WiFi. The labour is higher on day one. The three-year cost is usually lower once you count a return visit and a subscription you did not budget.
Wireless still has a place: rentals, a single porch that already has signal, one blocked outbuilding. It is not a substitute for a gate camera on a tree-lined drive.
If we are already opening loft routes, adding access point drops on the same visit is often the tidy answer. That is data cabling and whole home WiFi, quoted as extras you can accept or refuse.
Town patterns that change the quote
- Windsor and Slough: neighbour-aware porch and side-path cameras, loft routes, shorter days, street elevations that have to stay clean
- Maidenhead and Wokingham: mix of town driveways and longer village gardens
- Ascot, Virginia Water and Sunningdale: gates, drives, trees, extra buildings
- Camberley and Bracknell: estate streets plus wooded edges and the occasional three storey townhouse
We do not publish a single pound figure because those jobs are not the same product.
A Wokingham semi with a short drive is usually a loft-and-soffit day. A Virginia Water plot with a gate, a garage suite and a pool house is a backbone. The cameras look similar in the basket. The labour does not.
Network readiness is part of the cost
Remote viewing needs a stable path from the NVR to your phone. If upstairs WiFi already drops, the CCTV app will too. That is not a camera fault.
We will not quietly depend on a congested mesh hop and then charge you to “fix the cameras” next month. Either the existing network is good enough, or we quote the missing access point.
On larger plots the same Cat6 that feeds cameras can feed those access points. Planning that once is cheaper than opening the loft twice. How many Ethernet points is the room-by-room version.
Adding cameras later
Leave spare ports and a labelled route if you think a side gate or a garden building will come later. The second visit is cheaper when the backbone is already there.
It is more expensive when the first installer used wireless everywhere and there is nothing in the loft to hang a new drop from. We would rather tell you that on day one.
What we will not do to win the quote
We will not under-specify a gate camera as wireless to look cheaper, then come back when it drops. We will not aim a porch camera so wide that it records the house opposite and call that “more coverage”. We will not hide a call-out fee in the small print.
If a kit you already bought can be reused on a proper cable, we will say so. If it cannot, we will say that too. Choosing a CCTV system is the product conversation. This page is the labour conversation.
