The camera gets the attention. The storage decides whether you have evidence. A lot of “my CCTV missed it” jobs we attend are not lens problems. The clip was never kept, the cloud plan had rolled, or the broadband was down at the wrong moment.

What a recorder actually is
A local recorder, often an NVR, is a small computer with a disk. PoE cameras land on it by Ethernet. It writes video. You view live or playback from a phone or a monitor. If the internet dies, recording continues. If a camera vendor changes a tariff, your last fortnight is still on the disk in the cupboard.
That is the opposite of a camera that only exists as an account in someone else’s data centre.
You still need a network. The recorder wants a switch, a sensible IP plan, and preferably the same Cat6 that feeds the cameras. On many homes we put the recorder next to the WiFi cabinet so one lockable space holds both.
Ubiquiti UniFi is what we often use for that LAN and WiFi layer. The cameras can be a separate CCTV system on the same switch. Mixing “the WiFi brand” and “the camera brand” is normal. Mixing “no recorder” and “I need evidence” is not.
A recorder is not a magic box. It needs ventilation, a decent disk, and a place you can actually reach when something beeps. A sealed loft with no boards is a bad home for electronics. A cupboard under the stairs with a vent and a lock is a good one. We will say if your preferred shelf will cook the disk.
On a typical Berkshire install the recorder, PoE switch and, if you want one, a small UPS sit together. Cameras do not talk to the cloud for the main copy. The phone app is a window onto that box, not the archive itself.
Cloud kits: convenience with a meter running
Cloud cameras are easy to hang. The app is polished. The bill is the part people skip in the shop.
Typical catches:
- Free history is a day or two, then a monthly fee per camera
- “Unlimited” still means compressed, motion-only, or fair-use
- Sharing the account with family also shares the ability to delete
- When the WAN is down, upload stops
- When the company changes terms, your archive policy changes with it
- Exporting a clip for an insurer can mean waiting on someone else’s servers
A doorbell on a rental in Slough can live with that. A four-camera house in Ascot with a long drive should not. Multiply a monthly fee by four cameras and a few years, and you have paid for a recorder several times without owning a disk.
If you like the app alerts, keep them. Just do not let the app be the only copy.
We see the same pattern after storms and Openreach faults: the household still had power, the cameras were up, and the cloud copy never arrived because the broadband was dead. Local recording would have kept the evening. Cloud-only did not.
A hybrid that works: PoE cameras writing to a local recorder, doorbell on a cloud plan for parcel pings. Two systems, one visit, one honest brief about which copy is evidence.
How long footage should last
People ask for 90 days because it sounds thorough. They never watch day 73. Retention should match the time it takes you to notice a problem: a missed parcel, a scratched car, a break-in you discover in the morning.
Practical home ranges:
- A few days: doorbell-only, low risk
- 7 to 14 days: typical family house on motion or continuous
- 30 days: higher concern, larger disk, more cameras
More days means more disk, more heat, more to steal if someone takes the box. Put the recorder somewhere not obvious from the front door, and do not label the cupboard “CCTV”.
Overwrite is a feature. GDPR-adjacent common sense says do not keep strangers’ faces forever because the disk is big. Neighbours, delivery drivers and children walking past a Windsor terrace do not need to live on your drive for a year.
If you discover a problem two days later, a fortnight of disk is plenty. If you only check the app when something is already wrong, a longer retention does not fix the habit. It just stores more of everyone else’s Tuesday.
Motion recording stretches the same disk further than continuous. Continuous is cleaner on a drive you care about, because a slow walk can look like “no event” on a badly tuned detector. We set this on survey, not as a shop default.
Bitrate, resolution and why 4K fills a disk
4K at the driveway is useful. 4K on four cameras, 24 hours, continuous, will eat a disk. Motion recording, sensible bitrates, and not enabling every extra stream are how you get a fortnight without a 20TB hobby.
Night IR footage is often “noisier” and heavier than a sunny patio. That is another reason a survey beats a kit that claims “six months included”. A Virginia Water drive with four 4K cameras at night is a different disk to a single doorbell on a Maidenhead flat.
We set this on install, then show you how to export a clip. A recorder nobody can use is a paperweight.
Sub streams for the phone app and a main stream for the disk is normal. If both run at full 4K to the cloud, you will pay in bandwidth and in missed events when the WAN is busy. Local recording does not care that the rest of the street is streaming.
Do not buy the biggest disk in the shop as a substitute for a retention policy. A large disk that nobody overwrites still holds a year of other people’s faces. Pick days first, disk second.
Internet down, power down, disk dead
Three failures, three answers:
- WAN down: local recorder keeps writing. Cloud-only cameras usually do not.
- Power down: a small UPS on the recorder and PoE switch covers short cuts. A whole-house outage still stops cameras unless you have designed for it.
- Disk dead: disks fail. Use a reputable disk, replace on a schedule, and do not treat a five-year-old drive as eternal.
None of that is a reason to skip local storage. It is a reason to install it like equipment, not like a toy.
Short power cuts are common enough on rural edges of Bracknell and Windsor. A UPS that covers the recorder and switch for twenty minutes is often enough for the “who was at the gate when the lights flickered” job. Cameras without PoE from that switch still die. Design the power with the cameras, not after.
If someone steals the recorder, you have a problem. That is why it does not live in a porch, and why a second off-site copy is a separate conversation. Most homes do not need off-site. They need a cupboard that is not the first room a thief walks into.
What we fit on Berkshire homes
Default recommendation: PoE cameras, local recorder, app for viewing, cable routes that match camera positions. Cloud doorbell as an extra if you want it, not as the whole system.
That is the job on CCTV installation in Windsor, Maidenhead, Slough, Virginia Water and Bracknell.
On a compact Slough terrace that might be two cameras and a small recorder in a cupboard. On an Ascot drive it is more cameras, more disk, and a cabinet that can take the heat. Same category of system, different scale. We quote after we have seen the loft and the approaches, not from a camera count in an email.
If the house already needs data cabling for access points, the recorder lands in that same cabinet. One lock, one UPS, one visit.
Exporting a clip without calling us at midnight
Part of handover is you doing an export while we watch. If that feels embarrassing, it is still better than discovering you cannot do it after an incident. Phone apps differ. Local recorders differ. The principle does not: a file you can give to an insurer or the police, with a timestamp.
Accounts: one owner, extra viewers if needed, no shared “family” login on a tablet in the hall if that tablet also watches Netflix for the whole street to see. Cloud kits fail this test often. Local systems fail it when nobody knows the password in the drawer.
Disk health is a diary note, not a vibe. If the recorder starts clicking, call. RAID is uncommon on small home boxes. Treat the disk as a wearing part, like a boiler anode, not as immortal.
Write down where the recorder is, how it is powered, and who has the owner login. When you sell the house, wipe it. When a lodger leaves, remove their app. Storage is not only a disk size. It is who can watch last Tuesday.
