Buying home CCTV from a supermarket kit is easy. Getting a system that still records at 2am, in rain, on a long Windsor driveway, is a different job. This guide is how we choose a system on a survey: cable or wireless, recorder or cloud, how many cameras, and what actually drives the cost. It is not a brand league table.

Start with the property, not the camera
The right system is the one that covers the approaches to this house. A terraced plot in Slough, a riverside garden in Maidenhead, and a Wentworth-style plot in Virginia Water do not take the same design.
Walk the boundary and note:
- Where people actually arrive: front door, side gate, garage, rear kitchen door
- How long the driveway is, and whether trees or walls sit between the house and the road
- Where the router lives, and whether outdoor WiFi is already usable
- Whether you can get a cable through the loft, soffits or an existing duct
Construction decides the cable day. Solid Victorian brick in Windsor eats wireless. 1970s Bracknell lofts with boards are often a gift. Foil-backed insulation in newer Maidenhead and Ascot houses kills 2.4GHz before the camera tries to upload.
A camera on every corner looks thorough on a brochure. In practice, two well placed 4K cameras on the front and rear often beat six cheap ones that all look at the same patio. Count doors and gates, then add a camera only if that approach is not already in a useful frame.

Wired PoE vs battery and WiFi cameras
This is the decision that matters most.
Wired PoE uses one Cat6 cable per camera. That cable carries power and video back to a recorder. The camera does not use your WiFi. Picture quality stays consistent. The system keeps recording if the broadband drops. The work is the cable route, which is the same data cabling skill we use for access points.
On most homes the runs go loft to soffit to camera. We terminate, label, and land them on a PoE switch next to the recorder. That is boring work. It is also why the picture is still there in January.
Battery and WiFi cameras hang on a screw, join the home network, and upload clips to an app. They are the right answer when you rent, when a cable truly cannot run, or when you only need a doorbell view for a few months. They are a poor answer on a long driveway, a thick Victorian wall, or a house whose WiFi already dies in the back bedroom.
The failure is predictable. The camera sits outside the brick, often on metal or plastic, and tries to push video through the worst WiFi on the plot. A phone test in the kitchen does not prove the gate post is fine.
Hybrid systems are normal. We often wire the front and rear, then use one wireless camera on a shed or gate that would need a 40 metre trench. The wired cameras do the evidence. The wireless one is a convenience view. We say so in the quote so nobody treats the shed camera as the system of record.

Local recorder vs cloud subscription
Cloud apps feel modern until the monthly fee rises, the clip history shrinks, or the internet is down during the one incident you care about.
A local NVR or equivalent recorder sits in a cupboard, writes to a disk you own, and keeps going on the LAN. You can still view it from a phone. You are not paying rent on your own footage.
We usually put that box next to the network cabinet: ventilation, a lock, and a network cable, not a windowsill in a child’s bedroom. If the broadband dies, recording continues. If you want a clip for an insurer, you export a file, you do not wait for a cloud archive to catch up.
Cloud-only kits make sense for a single doorbell on a flat. They make less sense on a family house in Ascot with four cameras and a teenage interest in deleting things. Mix them if you want: local recording as the system of record, app notifications as the alert.

Resolution, night vision and the features that actually help
4K is useful on a driveway number plate. It is wasted on a dark side passage if the lens, infrared and housing are poor. Look at:
- Lens and field of view, not just megapixels
- Colour night performance versus cheap IR wash-out
- Whether audio is even legal or useful in that position
- Person detection that you can tune, not a flood of leaf alerts
- A housing that will survive a Berkshire winter on a south-west wall
A west-facing Windsor front will silhouette visitors at 4pm in winter if the camera looks into the sun. A camera too close to a white rendered wall will bloom in IR. A camera behind glass records its own reflection. Those are position and lens problems, not an app setting.
We stay vendor-neutral on camera brands. The categories above predict the result better than a logo. On the network side of the same visit we often use Ubiquiti UniFi for WiFi and switching, because the cameras still need a clean PoE switch and a LAN that does not fall over. That is a network choice, not a camera endorsement.
Person detection you can tune matters more than a “smart” label. On a tree-lined Virginia Water drive, leaves and headlights will otherwise fill your phone. Audio is its own decision: if you do not have a clear reason to keep conversations, do not record them.
What actually drives the cost
We do not publish install prices here because two houses with “four cameras” are not the same job. The quote moves with:
- Camera count and whether they are PoE, wireless, or a mix
- Cable length, height, and whether we can use the loft or need external trunking
- Recorder size and how many days of footage you want to keep
- Access equipment: towers, loft boards, listed-building constraints
- Whether we are also running WiFi access points on the same cables
A tidy loft in a 1970s Bracknell house is a short day. A deep eaves, a long gravel drive and a neighbour-sensitive rear garden in Windsor is not. Listed frontages and buried runs to an Ascot or Virginia Water gate add labour even when the camera count is the same.
Ask for a survey and a written scope, not a number from a Facebook ad. Photos help us give a range. They do not replace standing under the soffit with a tape.

Law, neighbours and doorbell cameras
UK home CCTV is legal when it covers your own property. Trouble starts when the field of view sits on a neighbour’s garden, their windows, or a shared alley you do not control. Doorbell cameras on terraced streets need extra care.
Capture what you need, not everything the lens can stretch to. A wide-angle doorbell on a Slough terrace will see pavement. That is normal. Aiming it at the house opposite is not. Audio recording is its own issue. If you are unsure, read home CCTV and UK law before you drill the first hole.
We will say on survey if a requested camera is a dispute waiting to happen. Losing that camera from the quote is cheaper than fitting an argument.
How we specify a system in Berkshire and Surrey
On a typical survey we walk the plot, photograph the likely routes, and recommend a camera count you can live with. We then quote the cabling, recorder and configuration as one job, and we will say so if a wireless doorbell is all you actually need.
We look at the loft hatch first, then the eaves. If the honest route is external trunking, we say that before we start. Recorder location is part of the same walk: lockable, ventilated, not obvious from the front door.

If the house also has dead-zone WiFi, do both on one visit. Cameras that share a congested ISP router will disappoint even if the lenses are excellent. A clean switch and a wired access point in the right place often matter as much as the camera housing.
A short decision tree we actually use
- Can we cable the important views? If yes, PoE and a recorder. If no, say so and limit wireless to that view.
- Do you need evidence when the internet is down? If yes, local disk. If no, a doorbell cloud kit might be enough.
- How many approaches does the house really have? Count doors and gates, not corners of brick.
- Is the WiFi already a mess? Fix it or stop putting cameras on it.
- Will a neighbour see this as a problem? Aim it so the answer is no.
If the answer to (1) is mixed, hybrid is fine. That is the survey. Everything else is hardware to match it. Where to position cameras and the install day are the next two chapters.
Do not start with a brand forum. Start with a walk around your own boundary at dusk.
