The Difference Between 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi
Most modern routers broadcast on two frequency bands. Understanding the difference helps explain why WiFi upstairs can behave inconsistently.
2.4GHz travels further and penetrates walls more effectively, but offers slower maximum speeds and is more susceptible to interference from neighbouring networks, baby monitors, and Bluetooth devices.
5GHz delivers faster speeds but has a shorter range and struggles much more with walls and floors. In many homes, the 5GHz signal barely reaches the first floor.
This is why you might see “full bars” upstairs on 2.4GHz but experience slow speeds. Your device is connected, but on the slower band. A proper WiFi system ensures strong 5GHz coverage on every floor.
Why WiFi Extenders Usually Make Things Worse
Many people try plug-in WiFi extenders as a first step. They are cheap, widely available, and seem like a quick fix. In reality, extenders often create more problems than they solve.

- Speeds are heavily reduced compared to the main router
- Devices “stick” to the extender even when the main router would be stronger
- They create separate network names, causing manual switching

Solution 1: Mesh WiFi Systems
A mesh WiFi system is one of the most effective ways to fix poor WiFi upstairs. Mesh systems use multiple access points that work together as one seamless network, providing strong coverage on every floor without manual switching.
For upstairs coverage, mesh works best when:
- A mesh node is placed on the landing or in an upstairs room with a strong signal from below
- The property has reasonably open construction (timber frames, stud walls)
- The distance between nodes is not too great
When installed correctly, mesh WiFi transforms upstairs coverage. The key is node placement. A mesh node placed at the far end of a corridor where signal is already weak will not help. It needs to be positioned where it can still receive a strong signal from the main unit.

Solution 2: Wired Access Points (Best Performance)

Router Positioning Can Help, But Only So Much
Moving your router to a more central location can sometimes improve upstairs coverage, but it is rarely a complete fix on its own.
- Central location within the property if possible
- Elevated position, not on the floor or in a cupboard
- Away from thick walls, metal objects, and sources of interference
- Not behind a TV or surrounded by other electronics
However, if the structure of the house blocks signal, repositioning the router alone will not solve upstairs WiFi problems. In these cases, additional access points are the reliable fix.
Loft Conversions and Extensions
Loft conversions are particularly challenging for WiFi. The combination of distance from the router, foil backed insulation, and the angle of the roof creates an environment where WiFi signals struggle badly.
If you use a loft room as a home office or bedroom, a dedicated access point in that space is almost always necessary. The same applies to rear extensions, which are often built with modern insulated walls that block WiFi effectively.
