How PoE Switches and Network Cabinets Work
In a professional installation, access points are powered using PoE (Power over Ethernet). This means the Ethernet cable carries both data and electrical power, so the access point does not need a separate plug socket. This is essential for ceiling mounted access points where power sockets are not available.
The PoE switch sits in a small network cabinet, usually located in a cupboard or utility area. This cabinet houses:
- The PoE switch that powers and connects all access points
- The broadband router or modem
- A network controller (if used) for managing the system
- Patch panel for neat cable termination

When Wired Access Points Make the Most Sense
We typically recommend wired access points when:
- The property is large, multi storey, or has thick walls
- There are extensions, loft conversions, or garden offices
- WiFi is needed for home offices, CCTV, or smart home systems
- Starlink or satellite broadband is the primary connection
- Mesh systems have been tried but still struggle with dead zones
- Multiple family members work from home and need reliable video calls

For homes where WiFi is poor upstairs, a single wired access point on the first floor often solves the problem completely.
Do Wired Access Points Require Data Cabling?
Yes. Wired access points rely on Cat6 Ethernet cabling to work properly. This is why professional data cabling is such an important part of reliable WiFi. We use Cat6 cable for all installations because it supports gigabit speeds and is future proof for faster standards.

Wired Access Points vs Mesh WiFi
Both wired access points and mesh WiFi can deliver excellent results, but they suit different situations:
Mesh WiFi is a good choice for medium sized homes where cabling is not practical. It is quicker to install and works well in properties with reasonably open construction. Our mesh WiFi guide covers this in detail.
Wired access points are the better choice for larger properties, homes with thick walls, or situations where maximum reliability is needed. They cost more upfront but deliver significantly better long term performance.
Many of our installations use a hybrid approach: wired access points in key areas with mesh coverage in harder to cable locations. This gives the best of both without over engineering the setup.
