Structured Cabling for Offices and Business Premises in Berkshire

Cat6 structured cabling for Berkshire offices, trading estates and small premises. How it differs from home wiring, and how it feeds business WiFi.

Search demand for “structured cabling Berkshire” and “network cabling Reading” is not people shopping for a mesh node. It is offices, clinics, workshops and small warehouses that have outgrown a consumer router in a cupboard. This guide is what a premises cabling job actually is, how it differs from a house, and how it feeds business and office WiFi.

What structured cabling means on a small commercial site

Structured cabling is a star topology. Every desk, access point, camera and door controller has a run back to a cabinet. Those runs land on a patch panel. Changes happen with a patch cord, not with another box under someone’s desk.

That sounds obvious until you walk a trading-estate unit in Slough where the original “network” is four daisy-chained switches, a WiFi extender in the meeting room, and a broadband router balanced on the kitchen fridge. Every extra person makes it worse. Cabling is how you stop that.

Typical commercial runs we install:

  • Dual Cat6 to desks that take a PC and a phone
  • Ceiling Cat6 for WiFi access points
  • PoE runs for CCTV and door entry
  • A lockable cabinet with a patch panel, PoE switch and labelled looms
  • A clean handover document so the next IT person is not guessing

We use Cat6 as the default. Cat6a appears where 10 Gig or longer PoE camera runs need the extra headroom. The grade comparison is in Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a, and the same physics apply at work.

Star topology is the bit people skip when they “just add a switch”. A switch under desk six, fed from desk four, fed from a cheap router in the kitchen, is a chain. When desk four moves, half the floor dies. A patch panel in a cabinet means desk six is a patch cord, not a recut.

We label both ends of every run. Port 12 on the panel is the same 12 at the plate. That is the product. A cabinet full of mystery greys that happens to work on day one is not structured cabling. It is a future outage.

Small premises still count. Eight desks, two APs, three cameras, and a door controller is already enough to justify a cabinet. Waiting until you have forty people is how you recable a live office.

The cabinet should be lockable, off the floor, and somewhere an engineer can stand without blocking a fire exit. A comms “cupboard” that is also the cleaning store is how patch leads get used as hanging space.

Office vs home: why a house kit fails at 9am

Home WiFi is designed for a family. An office adds density, guest devices, printers that still use ancient discovery, and a boss who notices when the call drops.

A consumer mesh in an open-plan Reading office will look fine at 7pm. At 9.15am, thirty laptops, phones and a Teams room on the same airtime will not. Wired access points on a planned grid, with a PoE switch in a cabinet, is the adult version of that kit.

On the radio side we often specify Ubiquiti UniFi for small Berkshire offices because the controller, switching and access points hang together and you can see what is actually connected. That is a network platform choice. It is not a requirement: the cabling still has to be right first.

Guest phones at reception, a waiting room, and a meeting room that hosts clients are not a second password on the staff SSID. They are a separate network on the same copper. Cabling does not create that policy, but without the APs on Ethernet you cannot enforce it cleanly.

Reading, Slough, Maidenhead and Bracknell premises

The jobs we see most:

Warehouses and workshops have different RF problems again: WiFi for warehouses and workshops.

Slough units are often a long rectangle with a mezzanine office at one end. The temptation is one AP in the office and hope. The floor then has no signal, or the warehouse radios shout through the partition into the meeting room. Grid APs on Cat6, and a cabinet that is not in the tea point, is the usual cure.

Maidenhead high-street rooms and older stock often have no usable ceiling void. We use containment, a wall cabinet, and routes that a landlord can live with.

What a commercial install actually involves

  1. Survey: floor plan, desk count, AP positions, camera positions, incoming broadband, fire stopping.
  2. Cabinet location: not in the kitchen, not on the floor, not behind a stack of paper.
  3. Containment: trunking, basket, or existing voids. We do not hide cables in a way that fails a later inspection.
  4. Termination and testing: every run labelled both ends, tested, and presented on the patch panel.
  5. Active kit: switch, firewall or router as specified, access points, guest network.
  6. Handover: a simple drawing and credentials, not a mystery pile of unmarked sockets.

Guest traffic should never sit on the staff LAN. That is guest WiFi done properly, and it is much easier once the cabling exists.

The survey is where we count desks as they are used, not as the lease plan hoped. A “hot desk” zone still needs plates. A meeting room needs coverage and usually a plate for a screen. A store room does not need a dual outlet because someone might put a PC in there one day.

We look at how the incoming broadband arrives, who owns the ONT, and whether the cabinet can sit next to it. A 30 metre patch from a corridor cupboard to “the IT corner” is a trip hazard and a future fault. Move the cabinet, or run a proper backbone, but do not leave a domestic router on a window sill as the heart of the floor.

What drives the quote

We do not list office prices here. Two 12-desk rooms are not equal if one has a usable ceiling void and the other is a listed frontage on a Maidenhead high street. The quote moves with run count, containment, working hours (evenings and weekends cost more), and whether we are also fitting WiFi, CCTV or both.

A WiFi survey first is worth it when the complaint is “it is slow” and nobody has measured anything. Cabling a building blindly is how you pay twice.

Run count is the obvious driver. Dual plates at twelve desks, four APs, six cameras, and a couple of door runs is a different drum to “two extra wall sockets”. Containment is the one that surprises people. Basket and trunking, painted in, with lids that still open in a year, cost more than a loft drop in a semi. They are also why the next engineer does not rip your ceiling.

If we are fitting UniFi switching and APs on the same visit, that is a combined job, not a cabling price plus a surprise kit invoice.

How this turns into a lead, not a science project

If you run a premises in Berkshire and the network is held together with domestic kit, the next step is a survey, not another box from a supermarket. We will tell you if three extra wall plates are enough, or if you need a cabinet and a proper AP grid.

Start with data cabling or business and office WiFi, then pick the town page that matches the site.

Bring a floor plan if you have one, a photo of the current “comms cupboard”, and a note of how many people are in at 9am, not how many desks the agent advertised. If guest WiFi, cameras, or a workshop floor are in the brief, say so on the first email. That is one design, not a series of extras.

Containment, fire stopping and the unsexy part of the quote

Basket and trunking are not extras to skip so the price looks like a house job. They are how the next engineer does not rip your ceiling to find a cable. Where we cross a fire compartment, we stop it properly. That is one reason a commercial day costs more than a loft drop in a semi.

We also label both ends. A cabinet full of mystery greys is not a professional install, even if it works on day one. When the till moves in month six, labels are the product.

If your “office” is three people in a converted garage at home, stay on the data cabling house service. This article is for premises that already feel like work.

Containment should match how the building is used. A painted dado trunking on a clinic wall is appropriate. A sagging cable tray held up with zip ties above a workshop is not. In a warehouse we plan routes that forklifts and future racking will not destroy.

How this ties to WiFi surveys and UniFi

A cable plan without an AP plan is a lot of plates in the wrong places. We would rather survey first on a messy floor. On a simple rectangular unit we can design APs and cables together on one visit.

UniFi switching and APs are a common finish because the customer can see the network afterwards. The copper still has to be right. We will not drop a pretty controller onto a daisy-chain of domestic switches and call it structured cabling.

A WiFi survey tells us where the APs should sit, how many, and whether the warehouse and the office need separating. The cabling visit then puts Cat6 to those positions, not to a guess from a catalogue grid.

What is structured cabling in an office?

Do small offices in Reading and Slough need it?

Is this the same as data centre cabling?
