A warehouse is not a large living room. Pallet racking is a Faraday cage you walk through for a living. Cladding reflects. Doors open onto a yard that also wants signal. The mesh node that “worked in the office” is how Bracknell and Slough units end up with scanners that only work by the kettle.
This is the industrial cousin of business WiFi. Bring a floor plan with racking drawn on, or the survey will lie.
What the building does to radio

Phones in the office manager’s pocket are not a test of aisle 7. Handheld scanners at chest height, between pallets, are.
Steel racking is not clutter. It is a set of metal walls with gaps you walk through. Signal that looks fine down the spine of the aisle dies when you step between pallets. A heatmap from the mezzanine will lie about that. We walk the floor with the device you actually scan with, at the height you hold it.
Stock level is a season. January empty is not November full. An AP that “covered the unit” on moving-in day will vanish behind cardboard in Q4. Tell us if we are seeing the building empty.
High roofs are a trap. One lighthouse AP paints the tops of pallets and leaves chest height quiet. Forklifts become moving shields. We would rather more APs, lower, aimed at aisles. Mezzanine offices shadow what sits under them. A roller door open onto a yard is not indoor coverage. It is a hole into weather, vans, and a different design.
Design that works on a unit
- APs down the aisles or on a grid that matches racking, not a single high “lighthouse”
- Cabled backhaul. Wireless backhaul through stock is a hobby
- A separate SSID or at least a designed 2.4GHz for scanners
- Office WiFi as its own coverage problem, not a leak from the warehouse
- External AP for the yard if people actually work there
UniFi (or similar) belongs here because you can see a scanner drop and which AP it was on. Consumer mesh apps cannot tell you that at 6am.
Power and mounting on a high roof need a proper conversation. We will not stand on racking for a bargain quote.
The grid follows the racking, not a pretty rectangle on a blank CAD. If aisles run long, APs run along them. If you reconfigure racking twice a year, tell us, because the cable plan has to survive a move. We still cable the APs. A mesh hop through stock is a demonstration, not a network.
Office WiFi is a different job on the same site. Desks want 5GHz in rooms. Scanners want a designed 2.4GHz on the floor. Letting warehouse radios flood the office is how laptops cling to a distant AP over the loading door. We split SSIDs and we aim the radios.
The yard only gets an AP if people work there. That AP is external, cabled, and weather-rated. Mounting needs access equipment, not a ladder and optimism. We will not stand on racking. PoE back to a cabinet is the point.
UniFi helps after the install because a 6am scanner drop can be matched to an AP. It does not replace walking aisle 12 with the actual handheld.
Mixed units: office plus warehouse plus yard
Very common on Slough trading estates and Bracknell parks: ten desks, a floor of stock, a loading door. That is three designs.
Do not let warehouse APs flood the office with sticky 2.4GHz. Do not expect the office AP to reach the van. Guest WiFi for drivers waiting in reception, staff LAN for the desks, scanner SSID for the floor.
CCTV on the yard should be wired. Asking a wireless camera to ride warehouse WiFi is how you get neither security nor stock scans. Why CCTV drops off WiFi.
The office wants a small AP grid, a cabinet, and staff and guest names. The warehouse wants aisle coverage and handhelds that roam. The yard wants an outdoor radio and, often, cameras on PoE. One consumer mesh in the kitchenette cannot be all three.
Drivers in reception should land on guest, not on the scanner SSID. Staff at desks stay on staff. Handhelds stay on a network that will not be knocked off by a waiting-room iPad update.
We see mixed units try to “let the office leak into the warehouse” because it is cheaper on paper. It works until the first full racking goes up. Then someone buys a mesh node for the loading door. Cable the floor. Treat the office as its own rooms.
Cameras share the cabinet, not the scanner VLAN. CCTV installation is the service page for that half. If the “warehouse” is a single workshop bay with two benches and no racking, say so. That can be one extra AP, not a full aisle grid.
Cabling in industrial buildings
Basket, steelwork, and a cabinet that is not on the floor behind a pallet. Fire stopping where you cross compartments. This is structured cabling, not a loft drop in a semi.
Data cabling still applies. The containment just looks less like a house.
Industrial runs live in basket or on steel, labelled both ends, back to a cabinet you can reach without moving stock. We will not drop a domestic switch on a pallet and call it a head-end. The cabinet goes on a wall, off the floor, away from the forklift path.
Fire compartments are real. Where we cross them, we stop them. That is one reason a unit takes longer than a house loft. AP drops need spare capacity because racking moves. An extra run in the basket is cheaper than a return visit when aisle 4 becomes a packing bench.
Power over Ethernet is how the radios stay up. Consumer injectors on a high roof are how they die in January. If the incoming broadband lands in a corner office, that is where the cabinet wants to live. If it is a damp box on an outside wall, we will talk about a proper cabinet inside.

Photos of empty concrete lie. Photos of full aisles, the mezzanine underside, the loading door, and the cupboard where the line lands are useful. A floor plan with racking drawn on is better than a brochure plan of the shell.
Tell us the handheld model if you can, or at least whether it is 2.4GHz only. Tell us if voice picking is in play, and shift times, because a survey at 10am on a quiet day is not a survey at 6am with three forklifts in the aisle.
If you already failed, say what was hung and where. What a WiFi survey involves is the method when predictive plans missed the stock. We do not need a warehouse-specific town URL. The office pages above are how this work is booked.
Scanners, voice picking and the 2.4GHz you cannot ignore
Handhelds are not laptops. They live low, they roam along metal aisles, and they are often stuck on older 2.4GHz chipsets. A design that only celebrates 6GHz for the office mezzanine will strand the people who pay the rent.
We walk the aisles with the device you actually use, not with a phone on 5GHz. We look at AP height: too high and you paint the tops of pallets; too low and forklifts become obstacles. We cable those APs. A mesh hop through racking is a demonstration, not a network.
If you also want CCTV on the yard, that is a PoE run and a recorder, not another SSID. CCTV installation can share the cabinet. It should not share the scanner VLAN.
Voice picking adds a second constraint. The handheld is carrying audio. Retries that a batch scan can hide will wreck a voice session. That is why we care about roam, overlap, and a 2.4GHz plan that is not leftover from the office mesh.
Older scanners will not speak the band the brochure is excited about. We design for the device on the belt, then we give office laptops the 5GHz they want. Two SSIDs, one cable plant.
Roaming along an aisle should be boring. Sticky behaviour, where a scanner clings to the radio over the dock, is how picks fail at the far end. Minimum rates and overlap are the fixes. None of that lives in a supermarket mesh app. If the scanners are new and speak 5GHz, say so. We will still cable the APs.
Empty unit versus live stock
Quotes done in an empty warehouse are optimistic. Stock arrives, coverage changes, and the “two APs will be fine” survey becomes a callback. Tell us if we are seeing the building empty. We will either come back when it is loaded or we will overspecify on purpose and say so.
Bracknell parks and Slough estates see this constantly. Reading units with mezzanine offices see the inverse: great office, dead floor. Office WiFi and this article should be read together, not as rivals.
An empty unit is a nice rectangle. Live stock is a maze that changes when a delivery lands. Predictive software loves the rectangle. We do not quote the rectangle as if it were the job unless you tell us the racking plan and we believe it.
If you are moving in next month, we can design from the drawings and overspecify. If you are already live and scanners fail in two aisles, we survey loaded. Mixing those days is how you pay twice.
Maidenhead workshops are often smaller: a garage with a mezzanine. Cable the AP. Do not hope the office node will do the bench. Reading mezzanine offices need the office article for the desks and this one for the floor. When stock is seasonal, we would rather hang the extra AP in summer than explain a dead aisle in November. Two units of the same floor area are not equal once racking, roof height, and access equipment enter the room.
