Home WiFi products in an office are how you get a nice screenshot at 7pm and a mutiny at 11am. Berkshire premises, from Bath Road units to Thames Valley Park floors, keep trying this because the kit is on the high street. Then they search “office WiFi”.
If that is you, this is the gap between a consumer mesh and business and office WiFi. Cabling background: structured cabling for offices.
What actually breaks
It is rarely “we need WiFi 7”. It is:
- One router in a comms cupboard, asked to cover glass meeting rooms
- A mesh node in a kitchen, repeating through metal studs
- Guest, staff and warehouse scanners on one SSID
- No idea how many devices are on at peak
- A broadband line that is fine, blamed because the WiFi is not
Why WiFi is slow with fast broadband is the home version. Offices add density and blame.
Printers, payment devices and older scanners still cling to 2.4GHz. A design that only thinks about 5GHz laptops will strand the till.
The 11am failure is airtime, not megabits. Thirty laptops join, half start a camera for Teams, and the radios spend their morning retrying. The speed test you ran at 7pm on an empty floor is not a measurement. It is a souvenir.
Sticky clients make it look worse. A phone joined the kitchen node at 8.30am and is still clinging to it from the far desk at noon, at one bar, while a ceiling access point sits ten metres away. Consumer mesh does not roam well under load.
Metal studs, foil-backed plasterboard, and a cupboard full of the ISP’s plastic all make it worse. Glass looks open. Glass is a reflector. Twelve staff is not twelve devices. If you cannot tell us the peak count, we will overspecify the radios on purpose.
The line gets the blame because it is the only number the ISP will talk about. If a wired laptop next to the router is fine and the meeting room is not, the line is not the job.
What a business install changes
- Access points on a grid, not a node wherever there was a socket
- Ethernet backhaul to a PoE switch in a cabinet
- Staff and guest networks that do not share files
- Visibility: you can see who is connected and restart an AP without a site visit
- A design that matches the floor, including warehouse leakage and meeting-room glass
Ubiquiti UniFi is a common platform for that in small Berkshire offices because the controller is something a manager can actually log into. It is not magic without Cat6.

A business install starts with a floor, not a box. We walk desks, glass, kitchens, and the cupboard where the broadband lands. Then we put access points where people sit, not where there happened to be a spare socket.
The cabinet is the unglamorous half. A small lockable wall cabinet, a PoE switch, labelled Cat6, and a patch panel you can point at. When an AP dies you swap a patch cord.
Staff and guest are separate networks, not two passwords on the same LAN. Warehouse scanners, if you have them, get their own treatment rather than sharing airtime with a waiting-room iPad. A manager who can see which AP is overloaded, and restart it without us driving over, stops ringing us for every blip. We will not drop UniFi onto a fridge-router and call it a project.
A rectangular floor with tiles is a short radio job once the cables exist. A listed Maidenhead frontage with no void is a containment conversation first. We name one staff SSID and set minimum rates so phones stop clinging to a distant AP.
Reading, Slough, Maidenhead, Bracknell
Slough trading estates: cladding, long plates, mixed office and warehouse. Home mesh dies at the far desk.

Bracknell: parks and industrial, often two storeys with a yard.

Slough units look simple from the car park and then eat radios. Metal cladding, a mezzanine, a floor of stock, and a kitchen node asked to cover all of it. We treat the office as one coverage problem and the warehouse as another. One SSID leaking from the mezzanine is how scanners work by the kettle and nowhere else.
Reading floors fail on density and glass. Meeting rooms look wireless-friendly until every laptop starts a camera. If you already failed a DIY install, measure before you buy more kit. What a WiFi survey involves is the method. WiFi survey Slough is the other town page we have for that work.
Maidenhead offices are often smaller and harder to cable: period frontages, no void, a landlord who does not want trunking on the feature wall. A six-desk room with no ceiling void can take longer than a twelve-desk rectangle with tiles.
Bracknell parks mix two storeys and a yard. The upstairs office can look fine while the workshop below has nothing. The yard wants an external AP if people actually work there. We will not pretend one indoor radio covers vans.
The cheaper path is usually “stop buying nodes”
Another extender is cheap until you count the hours of dropped calls. A survey plus a handful of wired APs is the cost that actually ends the thread.
Send a floor plan, desk count, and a note on what fails. We will say if you only need two APs and a cabinet, or if the line itself is the problem.
An extra mesh node feels like progress because you can buy it today. On a real floor it usually adds a second radio shouting through the same metal studs. We will keep a tiny two-person room on a decent mesh if that is honest. We will not keep stacking nodes on a 20-desk plate.
The cheaper path is the one you do once. Cable the positions, hang the APs, separate staff and guest, and stop touching it every Friday. That is wired access points in an office costume.
If the complaint is “it died this morning” and it was fine last week, say so. That can be a failed AP or an ISP change, not always a redesign. If it has been grim since you hired four more people, that is a design. Send a plan, mark the glass, and mark where the broadband lands. We can estimate from photos. We cannot honestly place APs from “open plan, about 15 people”.
A 12-desk office that looks fine on paper
Twelve people, one meeting room, a consumer mesh in the kitchenette, broadband of 500 Mbps. Evenings are fine. Mornings are not. The meeting room is glass. The AP is a node on a fridge. Phones stick to it from the far desk because it is “the guest network” someone turned on and forgot.
The fix is not a faster line. The fix is two ceiling APs on Cat6, a small cabinet, staff and guest SSIDs, and a switch you can point at. That is a one-day job in a simple rectangular floor, and a longer job if the ceiling is a listed void. Structured cabling is the bit that makes the radios honest.
Directors often want a portal and a splash page. Receptionists want the printer to work. Scanners in a back store want 2.4GHz that is not a junk drawer. Those are three requirements. A home kit has one: “internet exists”.
The fridge node was put there because the kettle needed a socket. The guest network was turned on in a hurry and never became a real VLAN. Teams in the glass room is the thing the director notices, so that is what we get asked to “make faster”.
On the day we land a cabinet near the incoming broadband, run two ceiling drops, hang two APs, and split staff and guest. If the back store has handhelds, those two office APs will not do. Handover is a drawing, labelled patching, and a login the office manager can actually use.
When the office is also a house
Plenty of Maidenhead and Windsor “offices” are a spare room with three people on Teams. Treat those as whole home WiFi with a decent office plate, not as a trading-estate project. The business pages are for premises. The house pages are for houses. If you mix them you either overbuy a cabinet or underbuy coverage.
Warehouse hybrids belong on WiFi for warehouses. Do not use this office article to cover aisle 12.
A converted garage in Maidenhead with three laptops is a house job: an Ethernet plate at the desk and an access point that can see the room. It does not need a 12U cabinet and a guest portal. A 12-desk unit on a Slough estate does. We will tell you which one you have.
Windsor and Maidenhead house-offices still fail in the usual domestic ways: router in a cupboard, thick walls, a garden studio on hope. Use whole home WiFi in Maidenhead and Windsor. The business town pages are for premises with a landlord, a floor plate, and a Monday morning density problem. If the house is also a waiting room, guest policy starts to matter. Cameras still should not sit on visitor WiFi.
The cabinet, the ceiling and the order of work
The order is boring on purpose. Incoming broadband, cabinet location, cable routes, AP positions, then names and passwords. Doing it backwards is how you end up with pretty radios on a daisy-chain of domestic switches.
Cabinet first: on a wall, not in the kitchen, not behind a stack of paper, with power that will not be killed by the cleaner. Ceiling second: APs in the room, on Cat6. If the void is usable we use it. If it is not, we talk about containment you can live with.
Radios third. UniFi APs are a common finish because you can see them afterwards. The brand does not fix a fridge-router. SSIDs last: staff, guest, and a scanner network only if you actually have scanners. If you already failed, survey before we cut. WiFi surveys exist for messy floors, not for a simple rectangle we can design from a plan.
