What a Professional WiFi Survey Actually Involves

A WiFi survey is a measured design, not a guess with a phone app. What we record, what you get back, and when Slough and Reading offices need one.

“WiFi survey” is a phrase people search when the network already hurts and nobody can explain why. In Slough and Reading we see the same pattern: a decent broadband line, a consumer router, maybe a mesh kit, and a drawing that exists only in someone’s head. A professional survey is how that becomes a design you can install once.

A survey is a measurement, not a sales walk

A proper survey records how the building behaves at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz (and 6 GHz where it is in play), where neighbouring networks sit, and where client devices actually fail. Phone speed-test apps are not that. They tell you one device, one spot, one moment.

On a house visit we still care about the obvious: solid floors, chimney breasts, kitchen foil-backed plasterboard, a garden office at the far fence. On a commercial visit we care about desk density, racking, meeting-room glass, and the 11am load, not the empty office at 6pm.

That is why office WiFi not coping and a survey belong together. Installing access points by eye in a Slough trading-estate unit is how you cover the director’s office and miss the warehouse door.

We also listen for the complaint that does not show up on a heatmap. “The scanner dies in aisle four after 10am” is capacity and interference. “Zoom is fine in the kitchen and useless in the loft bedroom” is construction. Those two jobs look similar on a floor plan and they are not the same radio problem.

A sales walk names a kit. A survey names positions, cable routes, and what we would leave alone.

What we do on site

The sequence is boring on purpose.

  1. Intake. What fails, for whom, at what time of day. “It is slow” is not a brief. “Warehouse scanners drop at the far aisle after 10am” is.
  2. Building walk. Construction, floor voids, power, incoming broadband, existing kit, and anything listed or awkward.
  3. Spectrum and coverage. We look at channel congestion and dead zones, not just a heat-map screenshot for the brochure.
  4. Capacity, not just bars. Ten laptops in a glass meeting room need a different answer from one iPad on a landing.
  5. Cable reality. There is no point specifying a ceiling AP that has no route. Survey and data cabling planning happen together.
  6. A written recommendation. AP count and type, mounting, cable routes, whether the current router can stay, and what we would not bother replacing.

On homes this often leads to whole home WiFi or mesh with honest limits. On offices it leads to a cabinet, a PoE switch, and access points on a grid.

Bring the device that actually fails if you can. A laptop in the meeting room will not reproduce a handheld scanner that lives on 2.4 GHz. On a house visit, stand where you take calls, not only where the router sits. We will still walk the loft hatch, the eaves, the cupboard the ISP used, and any outbuilding you care about.

Photos help before we arrive: the incoming line, the worst room, the loft hatch, and anything listed or landlord-restricted. They do not replace the visit. They stop us booking the wrong length of slot.

Predictive vs on-site: which one you actually need

Software can predict coverage from a floor plan. That is useful for a new-build office that does not exist yet. It is a poor substitute for a occupied Reading floor with metal blinds, a server cupboard in a stairwell, and a neighbour’s warehouse WiFi leaking through the partition.

We use plans where they help, then we still walk the site. Berkshire housing stock and Thames Valley office stock both punish people who design from Rightmove photos.

Period homes are the extreme version of this: WiFi in Victorian and period properties.

A predictive model does not know that the kitchen was lined with foil-backed board last year, or that the “open plan” living room still has a chimney breast the estate agent cropped out. It does not know warehouse racking is steel and full, or empty because you surveyed on a bank holiday.

On a new-build Bracknell or Reading office we will still ask for a drawing. We use it to estimate AP count and cable lengths, then we confirm on the floor once walls, furniture and glass are real. On a Victorian terrace in Windsor or a listed frontage in Maidenhead, the drawing is a sketch and the walk is the design.

When a house can skip a full survey

A three-bed with a clear loft, a router in a terrible cupboard, and a single dead bedroom is often a design we can confirm on a short visit and install the same week. The “survey” is still a survey, just shorter.

Skip a full commercial-style report when:

  • The property is small and open
  • You already know you want two wired access points and a loft run
  • Nobody is asking us to certify a floor for 80 devices

Do not skip it when:

  • A mesh kit has already failed
  • There is CCTV, a garden office, or a listed constraint
  • It is a workplace, clinic, or warehouse
  • You have been sold “WiFi 7” as if the generation number were a design

The short house visit still includes a loft look and a walk to the worst room. What you skip is the written commercial pack: desk counts, guest policy, scanner SSIDs, a drawing you could hand to another contractor. Plenty of Maidenhead and Windsor homes do not need that pack. They need two ceiling positions, a switch next to the incoming line, and a note on what we reused.

A failed three-pack is the other end of the scale. If the far wing is still dead, we measure the dying hop rather than guess a fourth node from an email. Warehouses, clinics and busy offices almost never skip a full survey. Empty-room speed tests lie.

Slough and Reading: why those searches exist

WiFi survey services in Slough and Reading show up in Search Console because offices and dense housing both sit on busy spectrum. Bath Road units share walls. Thames Valley Park floors share air. A survey is how we stop copying a house design into a floor plate that has forty laptops.

If the outcome is cabling plus access points, that is structured cabling for offices and business WiFi. If the outcome is “your ISP line is the problem”, we will say that too. A survey that always recommends the most expensive install is a sales visit.

Slough trading-estate jobs are often mixed: a small office at the front, a warehouse behind, a yard door that scanners use. A house-style mesh in the kitchenette will make the directors happy and leave the warehouse blind. Reading floors add glass meeting rooms, dense desks, and neighbours on the same channel.

We still survey houses in those towns. Terraces and flats on busy streets have the same 2.4 GHz soup as the office next door. A house note lists AP positions and a loft route. A premises note lists a grid, a cabinet, and staff versus guest.

What you should receive afterwards

You should get something you can act on:

  • A plain-English summary of why it fails
  • A proposed AP layout, not a product dump
  • Cable and cabinet notes
  • What we would reuse
  • A quote for the install, or a clear note that you only asked for the survey

You should not get a 40-page heat-map PDF and no recommendation. Pretty pictures without a cable plan are how surveys get a bad name.

A useful note names rooms in your language: “loft bedroom”, “rear kitchen”, “far aisle”. It should say whether the current router can stay as a modem, whether existing access points are in the wrong place, and which cable runs are loft drops versus external trunking. If we recommend UniFi, we will say why. If your existing mesh radios only need moving, we will say that too.

Ask for the recommendation in writing even if you hire someone else to drill. A survey you cannot hand to another installer was a conversation.

What we will not pretend a survey is

It is not a free install. It is not a heat-map poster. It is not a promise that we will always recommend the most expensive AP count. If the honest answer is “move the router and stop using extenders”, you get that answer. If the honest answer is a warehouse grid, you get that too.

Bring someone who knows what fails. A facilities person who was not there at 11am cannot brief a survey. Bring the scanner, not just a laptop, if scanners are the complaint.

After you have the note, you can hire us to install or take the design to someone else. We would rather you had a design than another guess. Choosing a WiFi installer still applies to whoever holds the drill.

We will not pretend WiFi 6 or WiFi 7 is a survey. Generation numbers do not place access points or run Cat6 through an eaves. If you only wanted a price for a four-bed, say that. We can often fold a short house assessment into a quote.

Homes versus premises on the same visit type

A house survey is shorter and often folds into a quote. A Slough trading-estate survey is a product of its own because the drawings matter. Use WiFi survey Slough or Reading when that is the search you already ran. Everyone else can start on WiFi survey.

On a house we are usually done in under two hours: intake, walk, loft, measurements in the rooms that fail, cable routes, then a note and a quote. On a multi-floor office we measure more than the empty meeting room. We want 11am load, guest phones, and whether the warehouse door is on a different planet from reception.

A Windsor three-storey brick house wants landing and far-wing coverage with reversible cabling. A Reading floor plate wants a grid, staff and guest separation, and a cabinet someone can restart without crawling under a desk. If your “office” is a spare room with three people on Teams, treat it as a house. If your “house” is a mixed unit with scanners, treat it as premises.
