Cat5e supports speeds up to 1 Gbps and is still found in many older installations. It works for current broadband speeds but offers less headroom for the future.
Cat6 supports speeds up to 10 Gbps over shorter runs and 1 Gbps at full 100 metre distance. It has better shielding against electromagnetic interference, which matters in homes with underfloor heating, electrical wiring, and other sources of interference running alongside cable routes.
