Why garden office WiFi drops out even when the house WiFi looks fine
A garden office setup fails for a few predictable reasons.
Outdoor walls and glazing kill signal
Garden rooms often have insulated panels, foil backed plasterboard, metal frames or heat reflective glazing. The WiFi might show full bars, but the signal quality is poor, so it drops under load.
You are on the edge of coverage
WiFi is not a light switch, it fades. When your laptop sits at the boundary, it will cling to a weak signal and bounce between access points or bands, especially if you are using mesh nodes in less than ideal positions.
Interference outside is real
Neighbour networks, Bluetooth, baby monitors, smart home gear and even some solar inverters can add noise. On top of that, the garden office is often reached through the noisiest part of the house, for example a kitchen full of devices or a hub in a cupboard.
The router location is wrong

The three reliable ways to get internet to a garden office
There are three options we use in the real world. The right answer depends on distance, line of sight, trenching, and how critical your work connection is.
Option 1: Run a Cat6 cable to the garden office
If you want the most stable result with the fewest future problems, a proper Ethernet cable run is still the best option.
- A stable connection that does not rely on radio signal
- Consistent video calls and uploads
- The ability to add a proper access point inside the garden office
- Better long term value because it is upgrade friendly
- We plan the route from the house to the garden room
- We run external grade cable and protect it properly
- We terminate into an Ethernet point in the office
- We install an access point inside for strong WiFi in that room

If you are digging anyway for power or drainage, it is often worth adding a second conduit for data. It keeps options open and saves rework later.
Option 2: Use a wireless bridge between the house and garden office
A wireless bridge is not the same thing as “a mesh node in the window”. A bridge uses two dedicated radios aimed at each other, one on the house and one on the garden office, creating a focused link.
- You have good line of sight between buildings
- You want to avoid trenching
- You need something stable but not as invasive as cabling
- Trees grow into the path
- People mount it inside behind glass and wonder why it drops
- Cheap gear is used and it collapses under load
For many homes in Berkshire and Surrey, a bridge is a great compromise when trenching is not practical.
Option 3: Extend a mesh system to the garden office
Mesh has its place, but it needs to be used correctly. Mesh is best when the garden office is close enough that you can place a node in a strong location, not at the far edge where it is already struggling.
- The garden office is close to the house
- You can place an intermediate node in a strong signal zone
- Your usage is moderate, for example general browsing and light calls
- You need high stability for work calls
- The office is at the end of a long garden
- The house walls are thick and the signal is already weak indoors

Which option should you choose
Choose Cat6 cabling if
- You work from the garden office daily
- You do video calls, VPN, large uploads or remote desktop
- You want something you install once and forget
Choose a wireless bridge if
- Trenching is not possible or you are renting
- You have line of sight or can mount externally with a clear path
- You want stability close to cabled performance
Choose mesh extension if
- The office is close and you can place nodes properly
- You want the lowest upfront disruption
- You are happy to accept that it is the least predictable method

Practical tips that stop dropouts regardless of which option you pick
These are the little things that make a big difference.
Do not keep the ISP router in a cupboard
If you have a BT hub or similar tucked away, you are starting from behind. In bigger homes, a proper designed setup like a whole home WiFi installation is usually the right answer.
Place access points where people use WiFi

Avoid cheap boosters

Think about future needs
If you plan to add CCTV, a shed camera, or more smart home devices, cabling becomes even more valuable. Running cable once for a CCTV installation alongside data saves having to revisit the job later.
