“Mesh WiFi for a large house 4 bedroom” is a real search, and it is usually asked after a one-box router has already lost. A 4-bed is the size where mesh can be excellent, and the size where a badly placed kit still fails.

How many nodes, without the marketing pack
Treat “3-pack” as a suggestion, not a design.
- Open 4-bed, timber floors, router in a decent central place: two nodes can be enough (router or main unit plus one).
- Typical Berkshire 4-bed, router in a front cupboard: three units, or two plus a move of the main unit.
- Solid floors, loft conversion, long rear extension: three is the start, and we may replace the far one with a wired AP.
- Garden office: that is not a fourth mesh hop. That is a cable. Garden office without dropouts.
More nodes on wireless backhaul can make things worse. Each hop spends airtime talking to its friends. Wired backhaul removes that tax.
The pack on the shelf is sized for a show-home, not for your plan. A Bracknell new-build with plasterboard and a reasonably central hallway is a different radio problem from a Windsor 4-bed with a chimney breast and a loft room. Both get sold the same three-pack. Only one of them will forgive it.
We would rather start with two well-placed units and add a third after a walk than drop four nodes on wireless backhaul “to be safe”. Safe, in mesh terms, is a strong link between nodes. It is not a node in every corner.
Where they should sit
Place nodes in good signal, aiming at the bad room, not inside the bad room hoping for magic.
Good:
- Landing, chest height or higher, not in a linen cupboard
- Rear of the ground floor if the router is at the front
- A shelf with ventilation, not a TV cabinet full of HDMI
Bad:
- The loft hatch as a “central” location (heat, insulation, distance)
- Behind the boiler
- On the floor “for now”
- In the dead bedroom, where the backhaul is already dying
Upstairs problems: poor WiFi upstairs. If the floor is the wall, mesh is swimming.
Height matters more than people think. A node on the floor sees table legs, radiators, and whoever is walking past. A node at chest height or on a landing shelf sees the next hop. Cupboards add doors, coats, and boilers. TV cabinets add HDMI leads and a metal back.
The landing is the workhorse in a two-storey 4-bed. It can see the stairs, a couple of bedrooms, and often the ground-floor hall. The rear living room or kitchen is the other common second position when broadband lands at the front. Those two, plus a main unit that is not buried, cover a surprising number of timber-floor houses.
Do not use the loft hatch as a compromise “middle of the house”. Insulation, heat, and a vertical hop through a solid floor are a poor backhaul. If the loft room is the complaint, the honest fix is often a small wired access point in that room, not a mesh node sitting on the hatch cover.
When we tell you to stop buying mesh
If you already own a three-pack and the far bedroom is still useless, a fourth node is rarely the honourable next step. We survey, then we cable an AP into that wing. That is mesh installation as a service: we will also say when not to use it.
4-bed detached in Ascot or Windsor with CCTV and a cabin: start on whole home WiFi, not another consumer kit.
Stop when cameras, a garden office, or a long outrigger bedroom are part of the brief. Those are cable jobs wearing a mesh costume. Wireless cameras on a struggling 2.4GHz hop are how driveways go blind. A cabin at the end of the garden is a Cat6 run, not hop four.
Stop when the house is period brick and the kit has already had a fair trial. Chimney breasts do not care that the box said “covers up to 6,000 square feet”. That number assumed an open plan and a show-home.
Town pages for a 4-bed install
Windsor, Slough, Maidenhead, Ascot, Virginia Water, Bracknell. Reading and Wokingham 4-beds use the mesh hub and whole home or Wokingham where those URLs exist.
Windsor and Maidenhead 4-beds are often brick, chimney, maybe a loft. Mesh can work if we place nodes in the hall and landing and we are honest about the far wing. Slough 4-beds add dense 2.4GHz from terraces and neighbours. Channel choice and node count both matter. Bracknell is more likely timber and plasterboard, which is kinder to wireless backhaul, until you add a long rear extension.
Ascot and Virginia Water 4-beds are frequently larger plots wearing a 4-bed label. The bedroom count is not the story. The garden, the annex, and the distance from the plant-room router are the story. Many of those visits become a hybrid: mesh where the hops are short, cable where they are not.
A worked example: front-cupboard router, rear kitchen, loft conversion
This is the 4-bed we see most. Broadband lands in a front cupboard. The kitchen is a rear extension. Someone works in a loft room. A two-pack sitting in the hallway and the kitchen looks logical and still fails the loft, because the kitchen node is busy talking to the cupboard through the ground-floor walls and has nothing left for a vertical hop.
What we would actually do:
- Move the main unit out of the cupboard, or accept the cupboard and cable the first AP
- Put a second node on the landing where it can see both the ground floor and the loft stairs
- If the loft still fails, run Cat6 from the cupboard to a small AP in the loft room and stop adding mesh hops
That last step is how mesh becomes a hybrid, which is how most “mesh vs wired” arguments should end. See wired access points vs mesh.
Smart plugs in the kitchen will still live on 2.4GHz. If those drop, it is smart home dropouts, not proof you need a fifth node.
The cupboard is the original sin in this layout. A main unit behind a closed door starts the whole system one wall down. Moving it to a hall shelf, even two metres, is often worth more than buying a third node. If the cupboard is the only place the incoming line can live, we treat it as a modem location and cable the first radio out.
Buying the kit versus paying for placement
A consumer three-pack is not a bad product. Unboxing it without a placement plan is a bad project. We will install your existing kit if the radios are still fit, then tell you if one of them should be retired. We will also sell a professional AP design if the house has already eaten two consumer generations.
Choosing a WiFi installer is the interview. If someone quotes a 4-bed without asking where the router is, they are selling a pack size.
CCTV, a cabin, or a long outrigger bedroom push the same house into whole home WiFi territory. Do not stretch mesh across a garden. Do not stretch it through a chimney breast and then blame the brand.
Bring the kit you already own. If the radios are current enough, placement and a bit of Ethernet will do more than a new generation number. UniFi ceiling access points are the usual step up when we have outgrown consumer sculpture: PoE, a controller, mounts that look like detectors. They still need cable.
What a 4-bed mesh visit actually looks like
We walk the incoming line, the worst room, the landing, and the loft hatch before we power anything on. Then we place the main unit where it can actually radiate, not where the ISP left a dusty shelf. Second and third nodes go in strong-signal rooms aimed at the weak ones.
We test with doors shut, on a phone and on whatever you work from. If a hop is already gasping, we stop adding nodes and talk about a Cat6 drop the same day if the loft is kind, or we book cabling if the eaves need a proper route.
You should leave with one SSID for people, a note of where each unit sits, and an instruction not to hide a spare node in a wardrobe later. If we cabled one AP, you should know which switch port feeds it.
Aftercare: names, bands and the one SSID rule
One network name for people, unless we have a reason to split IoT. Band steering that is too aggressive makes old laptops miserable. Too little roaming makes phones stick to the cupboard. We set that on the day and we would rather you call us than hide a fourth node in a wardrobe “as a test”.
Guest can be a second name if you actually have visitors you do not want on printers and cameras. It is not a coverage trick. Coverage is placement.
Firmware updates and a reboot after a power cut are normal. A node that never comes back after a cut is a support call, not a reason to buy a four-pack. If it worked on Monday and died on Tuesday, say that when you book.
