Starlink comes with everything you need to get started, and SpaceX designed the kit to be self installed. So why would you pay someone to do it? The honest answer is that DIY works fine for some homes and fails badly for others. The difference comes down to mounting, cable routing, weatherproofing, and what happens to the WiFi signal once Starlink is inside the house.

When DIY Starlink installation works fine
To be fair, there are situations where self installation is perfectly reasonable:
- You have a flat, accessible area in the garden with a clear sky view
- The Starlink cable can reach through a window or existing cable entry without drilling
- You only need internet in one or two rooms close to where the router sits
- You are comfortable running cables and do not mind visible wiring
If all of those apply, the included ground mount and plug in setup is straightforward. The problems start when any of those conditions are not met.
What DIY Starlink installation commonly gets wrong
1. Dish placement and sky view
Starlink needs a wide, unobstructed view of the sky. The app shows you an obstruction check, but many people place the dish where it is convenient rather than where the signal is best. A dish at ground level behind a fence or under the edge of a roofline will show intermittent dropouts that are hard to diagnose after the fact.
We assess the property and test multiple mounting positions before fixing anything in place. Common locations include the roofline, fascia, gable wall, chimney stack, or a pole mount. Each property is different, which is why we check before committing.
2. Mounting and long term stability
The Starlink dish is heavier than it looks, and it has a motorised base that adjusts position. If the mount is not secure, the dish can shift in high winds, leading to signal loss and potential damage. We have seen dishes cable tied to drainpipes, balanced on garden tables, and propped against shed walls.
A proper installation uses the right bracket for the surface type (brick, render, timber, tile) with appropriate fixings rated for the load and wind exposure. This is especially important in Windsor and Ascot where many properties have exposed or elevated mounting positions.
3. Cable routing and weatherproofing
Getting the Starlink cable from the dish into the house is where most DIY installs look messy or fail. Running it through an open window is not a long term solution. Drilling through a wall without proper sealing allows water ingress. Trailing cables across paths or up external walls without clips degrades over time.
We route cables neatly using external grade trunking or existing cable routes. Every wall entry is sealed and weatherproofed. The cable is clipped, protected from damage, and hidden where possible. The result is a clean finish that lasts.
4. WiFi coverage inside the house
This is the one most people do not think about until after the dish is up. The Starlink router has limited range. It works well in a small flat or single room, but in a 3 or 4 bedroom house it will not cover every room, especially upstairs or through thick walls.
Many homeowners install Starlink and then realise they still have poor WiFi upstairs or no signal in the back of the house. The dish is fine, but the WiFi distribution needs work.
We can pair Starlink with a whole home WiFi system, mesh WiFi, or wired access points to ensure every room has strong, stable coverage. This turns Starlink from “internet in one room” to “internet everywhere.”
5. Network integration
If you already have a router, mesh system, or smart home devices, adding Starlink into the mix can create conflicts. Double NAT issues, IP address clashes, and devices connecting to the wrong network are all common. We configure the network so everything works together cleanly, with one WiFi name and seamless roaming throughout the house.
