If you live in a rural part of Berkshire or Surrey, you already know the frustration. Your neighbours in town have fibre broadband with speeds over 100 Mbps while you are stuck on a slow ADSL connection that barely manages 5 Mbps on a good day. Video calls drop, streaming buffers constantly, and working from home feels like an uphill battle. The good news is that there are now several genuine alternatives to traditional broadband that work well in rural areas.
Why Rural Broadband Is Still So Poor
The core problem is distance from the telephone exchange. Traditional ADSL broadband speeds degrade significantly over long copper cable runs. If your home is more than two or three kilometres from the exchange, speeds drop dramatically. Many villages and hamlets across Berkshire and Surrey fall into this category.
Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) improved things for some areas by bringing fibre optic cable closer to homes, but the final connection still runs over copper. For properties at the end of long lines, this still results in speeds well below the advertised maximums. Full fibre (FTTP) solves this problem entirely, but rollout to rural areas has been slow and many properties have no confirmed build date.
Villages south of Reading, the countryside between Maidenhead and Marlow, and rural parts of Surrey around Chobham, Windlesham, and the North Downs all have pockets where broadband options remain extremely limited. If you are in one of these areas, waiting for fibre is not always a realistic option.
Option 1: Starlink Satellite Internet
Starlink has been a genuine game changer for rural homes. It uses a constellation of low earth orbit satellites to deliver broadband speeds typically between 50 and 200 Mbps, with latency low enough for video calls and online gaming. Unlike traditional satellite broadband, which suffered from high latency and data caps, Starlink provides a usable, modern internet experience.
The system requires a dish (called Dishy) mounted with a clear view of the sky. Trees, buildings, and other obstructions can reduce performance, which is why dish placement is critical. In rural Berkshire and Surrey, many properties are surrounded by mature trees, and finding the optimal mounting position often requires professional assessment.

Option 2: 4G and 5G Home Broadband
Mobile broadband using 4G or 5G can be a viable alternative in some rural locations. Providers like Three, EE, and Vodafone offer home broadband routers that use the mobile network instead of a phone line. If you have a strong 4G signal at your property, this can deliver speeds of 30 to 60 Mbps, which is a significant improvement over slow ADSL.
The challenge in rural areas is signal strength. Mobile coverage in the countryside is often patchy, particularly inside buildings with thick walls. An external antenna mounted on a chimney or gable wall can dramatically improve signal strength and make 4G broadband viable where it would otherwise be unusable. The antenna connects to the router via a cable, pulling in a much stronger signal than the router alone can achieve.
5G coverage is expanding but remains concentrated in urban areas. It is unlikely to reach most rural parts of Berkshire and Surrey in the near term, so 4G remains the more realistic mobile option for countryside properties.
Option 3: Amazon Kuiper (LEO Satellite)
Amazon has launched its own low earth orbit satellite internet service called Amazon LEO, previously known as Project Kuiper. Similar to Starlink, it provides high speed broadband using a network of satellites. The service is now available in the UK and offers another option for homes that cannot get fibre.

Option 4: Community Fibre and FTTP
Some rural communities have taken broadband into their own hands through community fibre schemes. These projects bring full fibre connections to villages and hamlets that the major providers have not prioritised. Organisations like Gigaclear and smaller local providers operate in parts of Berkshire and Surrey, though coverage is still limited.
If FTTP is available at your property, it is the best option in terms of raw speed and reliability. Speeds of 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps are typical, with symmetrical upload and download on many plans. Check with Openreach, Gigaclear, or your local provider to see if full fibre has reached your area.
Getting WiFi to Every Room in a Rural Home
Getting broadband to your property is only half the problem. Rural homes tend to be larger, with thicker walls, multiple floors, and outbuildings like garden offices and annexes. Standard routers rarely provide adequate WiFi coverage in these properties.
Whether you choose Starlink, 4G, or fibre, you will likely need a proper whole home WiFi system to distribute the connection throughout your home. This typically involves wired access points connected via Ethernet cable, or a high quality mesh WiFi system if cabling is not practical.
For Starlink installations, the default Starlink router provides reasonable WiFi in smaller spaces but struggles in larger homes. We typically recommend connecting the Starlink dish to a third party router or mesh system to ensure full coverage. Garden Offices and Outbuildings
Many rural homeowners have garden offices, workshops, or annexes that need reliable internet. Extending WiFi from the main house to an outbuilding across a garden rarely works well, especially over distances of more than 10 to 15 metres.
The best solution is a direct Ethernet cable run from the house to the outbuilding, with a dedicated access point installed inside. This gives you the same speed and reliability as the main house.
