# Period and Victorian Property WiFi: Thick Walls and Listed Buildings

Thick walls, chimney breasts and listed constraints: why period Berkshire houses kill a single router, and the cabling-first fixes that actually work.

“What internet works best for thick walls” is the search. The honest answer is: the internet you already have is often fine. The house is the antenna from hell. Victorian and Edwardian Berkshire homes, Windsor cottages, Maidenhead brick, listed frontages: a single ISP router loses.

## What the structure does to a signal

- Solid brick and stone, not a timber stud you can pretend is air

- Chimney breasts as RF walls down the middle of the plan

- Lath and plaster, then later foil-backed plasterboard in kitchens

- Metal in old extensions, conservatories, and fireplaces

- Decorative ceilings you cannot punch APs through without a conversation

Mesh marketing assumes an open-plan new-build. Period houses are a maze. Nodes in weak rooms hop through brick and then people say “mesh does not work”. Mesh was asked to do cabling’s job.

A hallway router in a Windsor terrace is already on the wrong side of the chimney. The front sitting room can look fine. The rear kitchen, often an extension with foil-lined boards and a run of appliances, is a different building. Upstairs, lath and a solid floor take whatever 5GHz had left. The loft conversion, if you have one, sits on a floor that was never meant to be an RF window.

Leaded glass, old radiators, and a metal conservatory roof all add to the same story. None of that is a broadband fault. A speed test next to the router can look perfect while the back bedroom cannot hold a call. That is the survey we do every week in Maidenhead, Eton, and the older streets of Slough.

## What actually works

1. **Move the first AP off the floor and out of the cupboard.** Still not enough on its own in a three-storey brick house.

2. **Cable the landing and the far wing.** One or two PoE access points, Cat6 in the loft, beats five consumer nodes.

3. **Use mesh only where a node can see a strong partner**, or give it wired backhaul.

UniFi (or similar) APs on a ceiling look like a smoke detector and behave like a hotel. That is the point. Consumer sculpture on a sideboard does not.

The landing is usually the honest second position in a three-storey house. From there you cover the stairs, a couple of bedrooms, and you stop asking the hallway router to punch through a chimney and a floor at once. The far wing, the rear extension, or the loft room is the third conversation. If we can drop Cat6 from the eaves into those ceilings, we do. If we cannot, we talk about painted trunking or a cupboard riser before we talk about another wireless hop.

We still use mesh in period houses when a node can sit in a room that already has a strong signal, aiming at the next room, not hiding in the dead one. Wireless backhaul through a chimney breast is how kits get a bad name. Ethernet backhaul is how the same radios suddenly look competent.

## Listed and conservation constraints

We design for reversible. Painted trunking, loft drops, cupboard risers. We will not destroy a cornice to hide a plate you will never use. If the only hidden path is destructive, we will recommend a visible tidy route instead.

Listed does not mean “no WiFi”. It means we do not chase decorative plaster for a wall plate nobody will look at twice. A ceiling AP that looks like a detector is often kinder than a consumer node on a period sideboard, and it does not need a hole in the cornice.

Conservation areas care about what you see from the street. We photograph proposed external routes before we cut anything on a front or side elevation. Colour-matched trunking on a side return is a common answer. Speculative chasing across lath is not.

Landlord and leasehold flats add a second constraint: we cannot treat communal voids as our loft. That is a slower conversation than a freehold Windsor house, and we will say so before we book a drill day.

## Thick walls are not a reason to wait for fibre

What internet works best for thick walls or large properties is almost never a new ISP contract. It is distribution: wired access points, loft Cat6, and honest advice when mesh is being asked to punch through a chimney breast.

We keep meeting people who delayed indoor WiFi because “fibre is coming”. Fibre changes the number on a speed test next to the router. It does not move the router out of the under-stairs cupboard, put an access point on the half landing, or feed the garden room. If the test beside the socket is healthy, spend the next conversation on distribution. If it is poor and you are on a village line, fix the incoming service first. Period walls will be waiting either way.

## A room-by-room walk through a typical brick house

Stand in the hallway where the ISP left the router. The living room through the chimney breast is already a different building as far as radio is concerned. The kitchen extension, often foil-lined and full of appliances, is another. The first-floor bedroom over the bay is a third. The loft conversion, if you have one, is a fourth, with a floor that was never designed as an RF window.

That is why one extra mesh node on the landing can look like progress and still leave the rear bedroom useless. The node is talking through the same chimney that killed the router. The interesting number is how many of those nodes can be fed by cable.

A typical Windsor or Maidenhead period job we actually enjoy is two ceiling access points, Cat6 in the loft, a small switch next to the incoming line, and a tidy plate in the office. Bay windows and front bedrooms can be easier than rear rooms even when they are further from the street, because there is no chimney in the way. Rear extensions are the opposite: more distance, more metal, more kitchen noise on 2.4GHz. A conservatory off the rear can look like a nice place for a node and then cook the radio in summer.

## Conservation, neighbours and what we will not drill

Conservation areas do not ban WiFi. They ban thoughtless holes. We photograph proposed external routes before we cut anything you will see from the street. Painted trunking on a side elevation is often kinder than a speculative chase across decorative lath.

If a neighbour shares a wall, we also think about their mesh. Period terraces in parts of Windsor and Slough are as spectrally busy as Hounslow. Channel choice is part of the survey, not a footnote.

We will not drill a decorative ceiling rose. We will not chase a stair wall that is the showpiece of the hall. We will not run outdoor-grade cable as a cheap indoor shortcut and hope nobody looks in the eaves.

We will drill where a hatch, a cupboard, or a service void already exists. We will use the loft as the motorway wherever the eaves allow a crawl. Older Windsor and Eton eaves are tighter than a Bracknell new-build loft. They still beat opening every room’s plaster.

If the only route to a garden room is external, we use proper outdoor sheath and containment, painted in, with a plan that will survive a future patio. Hope is not a backhaul on a period plot any more than it is on a new-build.

## What a typical period-home install day looks like

We start at the incoming line. The ISP router usually stays as a modem, or we put a small switch next to it in the cupboard if that cupboard is the only honest place for the kit. Ceiling access points go in on PoE. Cat6 comes from the loft or from painted trunking we agreed on survey.

The house stays lived in. We protect floors, we use the hatch, and we do not treat the kitchen table as a bench. Testing is walking the rooms that failed last week, on the devices you actually own, with doors shut.

Handover is one network name unless we have a reason to split IoT, a note of where the switch lives, and a number to call if a radio misbehaves. You should not need a forum to add a guest password.

## Broadband, Starlink and the thing people mix up

Thick walls do not mean you need satellite. They mean you need indoor distribution. Satellite is for a poor line at the boundary, which some rural period houses also have. If your speed test next to the router is fine and the back bedroom is not, do not order Starlink to fix brick. Garden buildings on period plots are usually a cable job. Hope is not a backhaul.

A dish on a listed roof is its own consent conversation. Indoor WiFi is not. Do not bundle them into one panic. Get the line honest, then get the rooms honest. Plenty of rural period houses need both. Plenty of Windsor and Maidenhead period houses only need the second.
